Sir Ian McKellen to Introduce Shakespeare Play Featuring Transgender and Non-Binary Cast Members

Sir Ian McKellen, the acclaimed actor known for his role as Gandalf in the "Lord of the Rings" films, is set to introduce a unique production of Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night" in London. This adaptation will feature an all-transgender and non-binary cast, showcasing a fresh perspective on the classic play.

The reading will take place in July, organized by the Trans What You Will theater group. McKellen, who is 86 years old, expressed his excitement about the project. He described "Twelfth Night" as one of Shakespeare’s most humorous and touching works, highlighting its exploration of gender and sexuality. In a message shared on the theater group’s Instagram, he encouraged everyone to attend, saying he looks forward to the impact of this new version.

Director Phoebe Kemp shared her enthusiasm for the production, noting that "Twelfth Night" already plays with themes of gender and performance. She believes Shakespeare’s work resonates with contemporary issues, making it perfect for a modern adaptation. Kemp emphasized that this reading is about joy and solidarity, celebrating the talents of trans and non-binary artists.

The play itself revolves around mistaken identities and love entanglements. The main character, Viola, disguises herself as a man after being shipwrecked, leading to a complicated love triangle. This production aims to highlight the queer elements of the story, making them more explicit through the experiences of the cast.

McKellen, a long-time advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, has previously stated that his activism has been more meaningful to him than his acting career. He played a significant role in fighting for gay rights in the UK during the 1980s and has co-founded organizations to support the community.

This adaptation of "Twelfth Night" promises to be a celebration of diversity and creativity, inviting audiences to experience Shakespeare in a new light.
