Three brothers from Edinburgh are gearing up for an incredible adventure as they attempt to row across the Pacific Ocean. Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan Maclean are set to leave Lima, Peru, on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 9 PM UK time. Their goal is to cover around 9,000 miles in a non-stop and unsupported journey to Sydney, Australia.
This isn’t their first challenge. The trio previously conquered the Atlantic Ocean, where they set three world records, including becoming the fastest brothers to row any ocean together. They completed that 3,000-mile journey in just 35 days, making history as the youngest trio to achieve this feat.
Their new adventure will last approximately four months, and they expect to spend over 120 days at sea. The brothers will be rowing in two-hour shifts around the clock, which will require around four million strokes. They know they will face tough weather, sleep deprivation, and the challenges of isolation on the vast ocean.
In addition to their personal challenge, the Maclean brothers aim to raise £1 million for their charity, The Maclean Foundation, which focuses on providing clean water. They have previously funded boreholes in Madagascar, helping over 5,000 people gain access to this vital resource. Ewan shared that their experiences have shown them how crucial clean water is for education and community health.
The boat they will use, named Rose Emily, is a custom-built carbon fiber vessel. The name honors their sister, who was lost during pregnancy. Their mother, Sheila, has painted the name onto the hull as a tribute.
As they prepare for their journey, the brothers are excited not just about the challenge but also about the chance to make a difference. They plan to bring along some comforts, including bagpipes and a small guitar, to keep their spirits high during the long hours of rowing. Jamie mentioned that this journey will honor their sister and that she will be with them every mile of the way.
With their sights set on the Pacific, the Maclean brothers are ready to take on one of the biggest challenges of their lives, blending adventure with a mission to help others.
