President Donald Trump’s administration is currently in discussions about accepting a luxury jet from Qatar. This potential gift, dubbed a “flying palace,” is valued at around $400 million. Reports suggest an announcement could come as soon as next week.
The news first broke on Sunday through ABC News, sparking a mix of reactions, even from some of Trump’s supporters. In response to the criticism, Trump took to social media to defend the move. He stated that the Defense Department receiving a free Boeing 747 aircraft to temporarily replace the aging Air Force One should not be a cause for concern. He criticized Democrats for wanting the government to pay full price for the plane, labeling them as “World Class Losers.”
Sources indicated that the U.S. government was preparing to accept the plane for Trump’s use before he leaves office. Afterward, it would reportedly be transferred to the Trump presidential library foundation. However, Ali Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Media Attaché to the U.S., told The Washington Post that the reports were inaccurate and emphasized that no final decision had been made yet. He explained that the matter is still under review by legal departments in both countries.
Qatar is known for its wealth and influence in the U.S., often using its resources to gain political favor. The country has faced scrutiny for its financial ties to groups like Hamas and for funding media outlets such as Al Jazeera. Politicians frequently visit Qatar on state-sponsored trips, enjoying the country’s lavish hospitality.
Trump is expected to visit Qatar soon as part of a trip through the Middle East. However, a White House official clarified that the jet would not be presented or accepted during that visit. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that any gift from a foreign government would be handled in compliance with the law and emphasized the administration’s commitment to transparency.
Additionally, sources mentioned that Attorney General Pam Bondi provided a legal memo indicating the transfer of ownership would be permissible after Trump’s term ends. Despite this, the news has stirred up controversy among some of Trump’s allies. Pro-Trump journalist Laura Loomer publicly advised Trump against accepting the jet, expressing concern about the potential negative impact on his administration’s reputation.
As discussions continue, the situation remains fluid, with many watching closely to see how it unfolds.
