Trump Promises to Cut Federal Funding for Colleges That Permit Illegal Protests

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration will cut all federal funding to schools and universities that permit illegal protests on their campuses. This statement came as protests against Israel have surged on college campuses, particularly at Barnard College and Columbia University in New York City.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that any foreign participants in these protests could face deportation, while American students involved could be expelled or arrested. He emphasized, “All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests.” His message also included a directive against wearing masks during these protests.

The announcement follows a warning from the Trump administration to Columbia University about potentially withdrawing over $50 million in government contracts. They are also reviewing more than $5 billion in grants to ensure the rights of Jewish students are upheld. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon stated that unlawful protests have disrupted campus life and denied Jewish students the educational opportunities they deserve.

Columbia University responded by affirming its commitment to fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination, stating, “We are resolute that calling for, promoting, or glorifying violence or terror has no place at our University.”

Recent events at Barnard College included students occupying a campus building while chanting slogans related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The administration had set a deadline for the students to vacate, threatening further action if they did not comply. Reports indicate that at least three students were expelled for their involvement in the protest.

Earlier this year, Columbia students engaged in disruptive protests, including pouring cement into toilets to hinder operations on campus. These actions were reportedly pre-planned by activist groups aiming to disrupt university activities.

The protests have been part of a larger wave of anti-Israel demonstrations across the country, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. This situation has prompted criticism from the public and lawmakers, leading to the resignations of several university presidents, including those from Columbia and Harvard, due to their handling of these protests.

As tensions rise on campuses, the Trump administration’s stance signals a significant shift in how federal funding may be tied to campus conduct regarding protests. The impact of this policy change remains to be seen as schools respond to the growing unrest.
