President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and announced a new, shorter deadline for reaching a peace deal regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking in Scotland alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump revealed that he would reduce the initial 50-day deadline he set for Putin just two weeks ago.
Trump highlighted the frustration he feels as Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine, undermining any progress toward peace. “We thought we had that settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever,” he said, referring to the tragic consequences of the conflict. He added, “That’s not the way to do it.”
The former president announced that the new deadline for Putin to achieve a peace deal would be approximately 10 to 12 days from now. He stated, “There’s no reason in waiting. We just don’t see any progress being made.”
Earlier this month, Trump had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Russia if a peace agreement was not reached by the original deadline. These tariffs would target countries that continue to do business with Russia, especially those that purchase its oil and gas. However, sources close to the Kremlin indicated that Putin was not particularly concerned about Trump’s ultimatum.
As the situation unfolds, Russia has intensified its military actions, launching significant missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, including attacks on civilian areas in Kyiv. Recent peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul yielded little success, with the two sides only agreeing to prisoner exchanges. The Kremlin is demanding that Ukraine relinquish territory captured by Russian forces, a condition that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected.
The ongoing conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with many civilians suffering as a result of the violence. As both sides remain entrenched in their positions, the urgency for a resolution grows, making Trump’s new timeline even more critical.
