Tylor Megill and Griffin Canning Secure Positions in Mets Rotation, Which Has ‘Plenty to Appreciate’

Tylor Megill has earned a spot in the New York Mets’ starting rotation after an impressive spring training. The right-handed pitcher showed significant improvement by limiting walks and managing his pitch count effectively. Manager Carlos Mendoza announced that Megill will make his season debut in Game 2 against the Houston Astros.

Joining Megill in the rotation is Griffin Canning, who will start Game 3 in Houston. Clay Holmes is set to pitch the season opener, while David Peterson and Kodai Senga will follow in Miami next week.

Paul Blackburn, who was also in the running for a starting role, will begin the season in the bullpen. Mendoza acknowledged the tough decisions he had to make, praising Megill for his hard work and ability to throw strikes. He emphasized that Megill came to camp focused and ready to compete, which ultimately led to his selection.

Canning, who signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract, was expected to secure a rotation spot from the outset. He finished spring training with a solid 1.88 ERA, including a final tune-up against the Marlins where he allowed only two earned runs in 4 ¹/₃ innings.

Megill’s journey to the rotation is noteworthy. After struggling last season and spending time in Triple-A, he returned to the majors in August and delivered a strong finish with a 2.32 ERA over his last six starts. He credited his success to focusing on attacking the strike zone and minimizing walks.

Blackburn, who had offseason surgery for a cerebrospinal fluid leak, is being prepared for a multi-inning relief role. He expressed confidence in his current form as he heads into the new season.

The Mets’ starting rotation is shaping up well, and Mendoza feels optimistic about the mix of pitchers. He highlighted their diverse skill sets and the potential for a strong performance this season. As the Mets gear up for their season opener, fans are eager to see how this revamped rotation will fare.
