"UN Aid Chief Claims Intentional Policy of Withholding Assistance in Gaza"

A recent attack in Gaza has sparked outrage and calls for accountability after 15 aid workers were killed. Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, is demanding answers from Israel regarding the incident. He emphasized the need for accountability and urged those with influence over Israel to take action to prevent further violence.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that their troops opened fire on vehicles they deemed suspicious. This occurred on March 23, after the IDF had called for an evacuation in the area, claiming Hamas militants were present. Among the deceased were eight workers from the Red Crescent, six members of Gaza’s Civil Defence unit, and a staff worker from UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

The bodies of the victims were reportedly found in a mass grave in Rafah, with evidence suggesting that Israeli military bulldozers had plowed over them and their ambulances. In a recent interview, Fletcher described the situation in Gaza as dire, stating that his colleagues have been recovering the bodies of medics from shallow graves. He highlighted the urgent humanitarian crisis, noting that aid is on the verge of running out and that they are unable to deliver essential supplies.

Fletcher raised concerns about a potential policy aimed at starving the people of Gaza. He referenced statements from Israeli officials suggesting that withholding aid is a strategy to pressure both the population and Hamas. He expressed alarm over food and medicine being left to rot at the borders while aid workers are obstructed from delivering necessary assistance.

The UN aid chief criticized the international response, particularly pointing out the lack of restraint from the United States, which has shown unwavering support for Israel during this military offensive. He warned that the humanitarian situation is worsening, with many people facing starvation and disease due to the blockade on aid.

Fletcher also drew attention to the situation in Sudan, where ongoing conflict has led to severe famine and the loss of many humanitarian workers. He stressed the need for global awareness and action to address these crises, stating that silence on such matters is unacceptable. The UN is working to reach millions in need, but the challenges are immense.

As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for accountability and a resolution to the suffering of those caught in the conflict.
