U.S. fighter jets launched airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen over the weekend, following the collapse of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The strikes took place on March 15, 2025, and were part of a broader response to escalating tensions in the region. Central Command jets from the USS Harry S. Truman targeted key military sites in the capital, Sanaa, as well as the Hodeida port and northern provinces. These strikes resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating 53 dead and 98 wounded.
The airstrikes were a preemptive measure triggered by the Houthis’ threats to resume attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, which they had halted during the ceasefire. This ceasefire ended after Israel stopped aid to Gaza due to Hamas’s refusal to negotiate terms. The Houthis declared their commitment to attacking any Israeli vessels, prompting the U.S. military to act.
Despite the heavy damage inflicted by the airstrikes, the Houthis responded with their own counterattacks, launching cruise missiles and drones toward the U.S. carrier group. U.S. officials reported that American warplanes intercepted 11 Houthi drones aimed at the carrier. Demonstrations erupted in Houthi-controlled areas, with crowds chanting against the U.S. and Israel.
In addition to the strikes in Yemen, the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at Israel, which were intercepted before reaching their targets. The U.S. Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, emphasized the ongoing airstrike campaign aimed at stopping Houthi threats, framing it as a mission to ensure freedom of navigation in the region.
President Trump, commenting on the situation, warned Iran to cease its support for the Houthis, stating that any attacks would be seen as directed from Tehran. He criticized the previous administration for allowing the Houthis to operate without restraint and promised a strong military response to their provocations.
The airstrikes not only aimed to diminish Houthi capabilities but also sent a message to Iran and other terrorist groups in the region. As tensions rise, the effectiveness of this military strategy and the U.S.’s long-term commitment to the region remain uncertain. The situation is fluid, with both the Houthis and Hamas showing resilience in their positions against U.S. and Israeli actions.
