This phase begins when a Pope dies or resigns, leaving the papal throne vacant. Cardinal Farrell’s first duty was to confirm the Pope’s death, which he did by calling the Pope’s baptismal name three times and announcing the news to key figures in the Church and government.

He will also seal the papal apartments and break the Pope’s signet ring to prevent its misuse. This process can take several weeks, as the Church prepares for the election of a new leader.
