Wyoming Republicans Call on Governor to Stand Up for Real Women Following Trans Bathroom Incident

Wyoming Republicans are urging Governor Mark Gordon to take action after a transgender activist used the women’s bathroom at the state capitol, seemingly in violation of state law. The incident involved 27-year-old Rihanna Kelver, who identifies as a woman. This occurred on the same day House Bill 72 took effect, a law designed to restrict access to bathrooms and locker rooms based on biological sex.

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus expressed their concerns on Tuesday, stating that Governor Gordon allowed Kelver to disregard the new law without facing any consequences. Kelver was filmed leaving the women’s restroom near the governor’s office in Cheyenne, after announcing plans to do so on social media in the weeks leading up to the event. A Wyoming Highway Patrol officer reportedly allowed Kelver to proceed, saying "OK" when he arrived.

State Representative Rachel Rodriguez Williams, who chairs the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, criticized the governor’s office for failing to uphold the law. She remarked that this incident sends a troubling message to women in Wyoming, suggesting they are unprotected in public spaces. “It’s unfortunate that the governor’s capitol law enforcement gave the guy permission to violate the law today,” she said. Rodriguez Williams emphasized the need for the state to stand firm in support of women’s rights.

Kelver, who has been featured in positive media coverage, defended his actions as a form of direct action to raise awareness about transgender issues. He stated that he hopes to communicate that it is acceptable to be transgender and to encourage conversations around the topic.

House Bill 72 allows individuals harmed by violations of the law to hold the government accountable for damages. Rodriguez Williams highlighted this aspect, urging the state to take a strong stance on the matter. She noted that while no women were present in the bathroom at the time, the lack of enforcement sends a negative message to women across the state.

This incident echoes a similar situation in Florida, where a transgender-identifying individual was arrested for entering a women’s restroom in a government building. Governor Gordon has previously faced criticism from conservative lawmakers for his stance on various issues, including abortion and transgender-related legislation. He has vetoed bills that would restrict abortion access and has been critical of laws aimed at defining gender.

As of now, Governor Gordon’s office has not responded to requests for comments regarding this situation. The ongoing debate over transgender rights and public restroom access continues to spark strong opinions and actions across the nation.
