Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism following his recent call with U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it the most productive conversation they have had so far. In a video address, Zelensky shared that the call took place just a day prior and highlighted discussions on critical air defense issues, particularly the need for the Patriot missile system to protect against ballistic threats.
Zelensky thanked Trump for his willingness to assist Ukraine, which has been facing increased air attacks from Russia. He noted that they also covered several other important topics that will be addressed in future meetings between their officials.
Trump echoed Zelensky’s sentiments, stating he had a good conversation and expressed disappointment regarding his earlier talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump criticized Moscow for its lack of cooperation in seeking a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
When asked about the possibility of the U.S. supplying more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, Trump acknowledged the need for additional defense support, saying, “They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard.”
The backdrop of this conversation includes a recent surge in Russian airstrikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, marking one of the largest drone attacks since the war began 40 months ago. Both leaders appear committed to strengthening their dialogue as Ukraine continues to seek support in its defense efforts.
