Senator Raises Concerns Over Virginia Schools Possible Coercion of Minors into Abortions

A Virginia school district is facing serious accusations regarding the treatment of minor Hispanic students concerning unwanted pregnancies. Fairfax County Public Schools is under scrutiny for allegedly pressuring these young girls to have abortions without informing their parents. Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana has raised concerns that this may violate federal law.

In a letter obtained by The Daily Wire, Cassidy requested that the school district clarify if they funded an abortion for a young girl without her parents’ knowledge. He emphasized that pressuring minors into abortions using school funds is illegal and called for accountability from the school board if the claims are true.

Fairfax County Public Schools has not responded to requests for comment. However, Superintendent Michelle Reid stated in August that the district had only recently become aware of the allegations and promised to take the investigation seriously. Reid assured the public that appropriate actions would follow once the facts are established.

The allegations center around incidents at Centreville High School, where a social worker named Carolina Diaz is accused of pressuring two students to terminate their pregnancies. According to reports, one girl went through with an abortion, while another, who was five months pregnant, fled an abortion clinic out of fear. Cassidy noted that a whistleblower teacher, Zenaida Perez, had raised concerns about these actions multiple times since May 2022, but claimed her warnings were ignored.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered a criminal investigation into the matter, highlighting the potential misuse of public funds for abortions. He expressed deep concern over the allegations that minors were assisted in obtaining abortions without parental consent.

Cassidy pointed out that Fairfax County Public Schools receives about $50 million annually in federal funding, which is subject to the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions. He stressed the importance of ensuring that federal education money is not misused and that parents’ rights are protected.

The senator has requested that the school district provide details about its policies regarding pregnant students and how they handle such situations. He is seeking clarity on what actions the school takes once it becomes aware of a student’s pregnancy.

Advocacy groups are also voicing their concerns. Sarah Zagorski from Americans United for Life stated that parents deserve better treatment for their children. She raised questions during a school board meeting about whether these incidents were isolated or part of a larger pattern of disregarding parental rights.

Zagorski emphasized that children, especially those from marginalized communities, need protection and guidance when facing unplanned pregnancies, rather than secrecy from adults who should be trustworthy. The situation has sparked outrage and calls for a thorough investigation to ensure the safety and rights of students are upheld.
