British couple in their 70s held by Taliban in Afghanistan

A British couple in their 70s, Peter and Barbie Reynolds, have been arrested by the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to their children. The couple, aged 79 and 75, was detained earlier this month, but the exact reasons for their arrest remain unclear.

Peter and Barbie have lived in Afghanistan for 18 years and were married in Kabul in 1970. They have continued their work in the country even after the Taliban regained control in 2021. The couple runs an organization called Rebuild, which focuses on providing education and training programs for various groups, including businesses and NGOs.

Photos from Rebuild’s website show both men and women participating in a range of courses, from teacher training to management. However, since the Taliban’s return to power, there have been significant restrictions on women’s education and activities in Afghanistan, making it a challenging environment for such initiatives.

In a letter to the Taliban’s interior ministry, the couple’s children expressed their concern and highlighted their parents’ commitment to Afghanistan. They emphasized that Peter and Barbie have always been open about their work and have respected local laws. The family stated that the couple does not represent any foreign interests and has a deep affection for the Afghan people.

After their arrest, the couple reportedly sent a message to their children, asking not to involve Western authorities. Their children reiterated their parents’ dedication to staying in Afghanistan, stating, "They have chosen Afghanistan as their home, rather than with family in England, and they wish to spend the rest of their lives in Afghanistan."

The UK Foreign Office is aware of the situation but has declined to comment further. The UK does not recognize the Taliban and does not have an embassy in Kabul, complicating any potential diplomatic efforts on behalf of the couple.
