Four Dead as Cable Car Plummets Near Naples Following Wire Failure

At least four people lost their lives when a cable car fell to the ground in Italy. The tragic incident occurred south of Naples, where officials reported that a cable snapped, leading to the crash. Among the deceased were two couples who were visiting as tourists.

A middle-aged man was the only survivor, but he is currently in critical condition. Authorities are still searching for one other person who remains unaccounted for. The governor of Campania shared this heartbreaking news with Sky News, emphasizing the loss felt by the community.

Rescue efforts involved around 50 responders from the local fire department. They faced challenges due to bad weather, including fog and high winds, which made the operation more difficult. In addition to the fatal crash, rescuers also helped 16 passengers from another cable car that had become stuck mid-air nearby. Those passengers were brought to safety one by one using harnesses.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences to the victims’ families while speaking from Washington, D.C., where she was meeting with President Donald Trump. The chairman of the public transport company that operates the cable car service called the incident “a tragedy.”

This cable car accident took place at Monte Faito, a popular destination known for its stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. The service had just reopened for the season a week prior. This incident is reminiscent of another cable car disaster in Italy in 2021, when 14 people died in a similar accident at Lake Maggiore.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the victims and their families during this difficult time.
