Iran is shifting its focus from a ceasefire with Israel to a major crackdown on internal security. This change comes as the country faces unrest, particularly in the Kurdish region. Reports indicate that Iranian authorities have ramped up mass arrests, executions, and military deployments in response to recent events.
Since Israel began airstrikes on June 13, Iranian security forces have intensified their presence on the streets, setting up checkpoints and increasing patrols. Officials and activists have noted a surge in arrests, with Iranian rights group HRNA reporting over 700 individuals detained on political or security charges since the conflict escalated. Many of these arrests are linked to accusations of spying for Israel.
Despite feelings of anger among many Iranians towards their government, there have been no significant protests against the authorities. A senior Iranian security official expressed concern over potential internal unrest, especially in Kurdish areas where ethnic tensions exist. Revolutionary Guard and Basij paramilitary units have been placed on high alert as the government aims to prevent any uprisings.
Activists within Iran are remaining cautious. One rights activist, who was jailed during previous protests, mentioned that many people have been summoned by authorities and either arrested or warned against dissent. The atmosphere of fear is palpable, with many choosing to stay out of the spotlight.
In a troubling development, Iranian state media reported the execution of three individuals in Urmia, close to the Turkish border. These executions have been linked to political charges, and reports indicate that the victims were Kurdish.
In addition to arrests, troops have been deployed to Iran’s borders with Pakistan, Iraq, and Azerbaijan. Officials are concerned about potential infiltration by what they describe as terrorists. Kurdish and Baluch minorities, who have historically opposed the Iranian government, are particularly affected by these security measures.
Kurdish opposition groups have reported that their members have also been targeted in this crackdown. The Revolutionary Guards have been conducting house-to-house searches for suspects and weapons, and there have been widespread military movements in Kurdish provinces.
As the situation develops, the Iranian government appears determined to maintain control amid rising tensions, using the conflict with Israel as a pretext for increased internal security measures.
