The Colorado Rockies are making significant changes after a rough start to the 2025 MLB season. Following a disappointing 3-15 record and a six-game losing streak, the team has decided to part ways with hitting coach Hensley Meulens. In his place, former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle has been brought back to lead the offense.
Meulens, who had been with the Rockies since 2022, struggled to improve the team’s offensive performance. General Manager Bill Schmidt expressed concern over the team’s lack of production, noting that they ranked last in wRC+ and had the highest strikeout rate in the league. Schmidt emphasized the need for a new approach to get the hitters going and praised Meulens for his dedication and knowledge of the game.
Hurdle, who previously managed the Rockies from 2002 to 2009, is no stranger to the franchise. He led the team to its first and only World Series appearance in 2007 and served as the hitting coach before his managerial role. After leaving Colorado, Hurdle managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for nine seasons, making three playoff appearances.
The Rockies have struggled offensively despite playing in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks. Before the coaching change, they had hit only 12 home runs, one of the lowest totals in baseball. Schmidt believes that Hurdle’s familiarity with many players from his time in the minors will help spark improvement.
The Rockies have not had a winning season since 2018 and have lost over 100 games in the past two years. Despite the turmoil, manager Bud Black remains in his position, with Schmidt praising his ability to keep the team competitive. He believes that with Hurdle’s help, the Rockies can turn things around.
As the team looks to bounce back, fans will be watching closely to see if Hurdle can reignite the Rockies’ offense and lead them out of their early-season slump.
