A shocking incident unfolded in Belize when a man hijacked a small plane, leading to a violent confrontation that left two passengers and the pilot injured. The hijacker, identified as Akinyela Taylor, allegedly stabbed his victims before being shot dead by one of the passengers.
The Tropic Air flight was en route from Corozal to San Pedro, a popular tourist destination, when the hijacking occurred. There were 14 passengers and two crew members on board at the time. The plane circled erratically for nearly two hours, followed closely by a police helicopter, before landing safely in Ladyville.
Belizean authorities declared a full emergency after the situation began around 8:30 AM local time. The pilot displayed remarkable bravery, managing to guide the aircraft to a secure landing despite the chaos. Maximillian Greif, the CEO of Tropic Air, praised the pilot’s heroic actions, emphasizing the calmness he showed under extreme pressure.
After the plane landed, emergency services rushed to assist the injured. The two passengers and the pilot received treatment for their stab wounds at a local hospital. One of the injured passengers, who was licensed to carry a firearm, shot Taylor, ending the violent episode.
Taylor, a U.S. military veteran according to Belize police, reportedly demanded to be flown out of Belize, possibly to Mexico or back to the United States. However, U.S. officials have not confirmed his military background or the reasons behind his actions.
The U.S. State Department described the situation as "horrifying," and the Belize police commissioner expressed gratitude for the courage shown by the pilot and the armed passenger. The injured passenger remains in critical condition, and the community is rallying in support.
As investigations continue, U.S. officials are collaborating with Belizean authorities to uncover the motive behind the hijacking. This incident has raised concerns about aviation security and the safety of passengers in the region.
