Stefanik Responds to Hochuls Criticism on Medicaid Cuts, Calls Her Worst Governor in America

Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York and a strong supporter of Donald Trump, is gearing up for a potential run for governor in 2026. Recently, she clashed with Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, whom she labeled the "worst governor in America." This exchange heated up after Hochul criticized Stefanik for her vote to cut Medicaid funding, which Hochul claimed would threaten hospitals in Stefanik’s district.

In a social media post, Hochul accused Stefanik of risking the health and jobs of her constituents to support Trump. Hochul emphasized her commitment to protecting New Yorkers’ health care, stating, "I won’t stand for it. I’m fighting like hell to save New Yorkers’ health care."

Stefanik quickly responded on X, formerly Twitter, inviting Hochul to engage in a debate about Medicaid. She criticized Hochul for her policies regarding illegal immigrants receiving Medicaid benefits, arguing that these decisions harm vulnerable New Yorkers. Stefanik claimed that under Hochul’s leadership, the state’s Medicaid program is plagued by waste and fraud.

The back-and-forth continued as Stefanik pointed out that Hochul’s approval ratings are plummeting in rural New York. She also mentioned her own recognition as a strong advocate for rural hospitals, asserting that she has worked hard to secure funding and support for these facilities.

Stefanik took a jab at Hochul’s political schedule, suggesting that she has been forced to respond to issues raised by Stefanik, including the controversial nomination of Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor. Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, has made headlines for his critical views on Israel, adding to the political tension.

Hochul has indicated that she plans to meet with Mamdani to discuss his ideas but has not yet endorsed him. Meanwhile, Stefanik has been making moves to solidify her position within New York’s Republican Party, recently launching a political action committee called Save New York.

The rivalry between Stefanik and Hochul highlights the growing political divide in New York as both prepare for what could be a contentious gubernatorial race in the coming years.
