Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, found himself in the midst of trade rumors involving the Pittsburgh Steelers, prompting him to take action to clarify the situation. The speculation arose last week when reports suggested that the Steelers were interested in acquiring Lawrence, who was caught completely off guard by the news. In response, he had his agent reach out to ESPN’s Adam Schefter to verify the accuracy of the rumors.
During an appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up & Adams,” Lawrence expressed his surprise, describing the moment as one that made his "heart drop." He emphasized that he was unaware of any trade discussions and was relieved to hear from his agent that the rumors were unfounded. Lawrence mentioned that he holds a no-trade clause in his contract, which would require his consent for any potential trade, and he made it clear that he is committed to the Jaguars and aims to lead them to a Super Bowl victory.
Jacksonville quickly dismissed the trade rumors, stating there was "no chance" they would consider moving the former No. 1 overall draft pick. Coach Liam Coen also reached out to Lawrence to reassure him that there was no truth to the speculation. The Jaguars are looking to rebuild after a disappointing 4-13 season that led to the firing of former head coach Doug Pederson.
Lawrence, who signed a lucrative five-year, $275 million contract prior to the 2024 season, is determined to remain with the Jaguars and help them improve. Last season, he faced challenges, playing only ten games due to injuries, during which he threw for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He has since undergone offseason surgery on an AC joint sprain, but he is focused on returning to form under the new coaching regime.
The interest from the Steelers makes sense, given their struggles at the quarterback position last season, where they alternated between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, ultimately falling short in the playoffs. However, with Lawrence firmly in the Jaguars’ plans, it appears that the Steelers will need to explore other options to address their quarterback needs.
