President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Hamas is open to a lasting peace agreement, following the group’s claim that it would release all remaining hostages. This development comes as negotiations continue over the details of Trump’s peace proposal.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the need for Israel to halt its bombing of Gaza to ensure the safe release of hostages. He stated, “Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!” He highlighted that the situation is too dangerous for the hostages and that discussions are ongoing to finalize the details.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded positively to Hamas’ statement, indicating that Israel is preparing to implement the first stage of Trump’s plan for the hostages’ release. Netanyahu expressed Israel’s commitment to working closely with Trump and his team to end the conflict in line with the proposed principles.
Hamas released a statement agreeing to free all remaining hostages and to hand over control of Gaza to an independent Palestinian authority. However, they did not agree to disarm, which is a key aspect of Trump’s proposal. The group stated they would release the hostages based on an exchange formula outlined in Trump’s plan, contingent upon meeting certain conditions.
In their statement, Hamas also expressed gratitude for Trump’s efforts to end the violence in Gaza, facilitate prisoner exchanges, and allow humanitarian aid into the region. They emphasized their rejection of occupation and the displacement of Palestinian people. Several Middle Eastern nations, including Egypt and Qatar, have also been involved in the peace discussions and welcomed Trump’s initiative.
According to Trump’s plan, Israel would need to release 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained after October 7, 2023, including all women and children. However, without Hamas agreeing to the full terms of the deal, Israel may hesitate to release these prisoners.
Earlier in the day, Trump urged Hamas to accept the 20-point peace plan by Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET or face severe consequences. The situation remains fluid, with all eyes on the negotiations and the potential for a breakthrough in the ongoing conflict.
