On Wednesday, President Donald Trump worked to gather support for a continuing resolution (CR) aimed at preventing a partial shutdown of the federal government. With just over a week until funding runs out, Trump reassured conservative lawmakers that this CR would align with their priorities.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the urgency, stating, “Government funding runs out next week, and Democrats are threatening to shut down the Government.” He expressed confidence that conservatives would appreciate the bill, as it would freeze spending for the current year while setting the stage for tax cuts and spending reductions in future legislation.
This CR is linked to a resolution that recently passed the House, which outlines budget priorities in areas like national defense and border security. If a funding bill is not approved by March 15, non-essential federal employees could be furloughed, while essential workers would continue to work without pay temporarily.
Some House Republicans have voiced their opposition to the CR, suggesting that bipartisan support will be crucial for its passage. However, reports indicate that Trump made headway in persuading some GOP members during a meeting at the White House on Wednesday.
House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain stated that only Democrats seem to want a government shutdown, urging her colleagues to support the CR to continue working on their agenda.
In addition, Elon Musk, who is leading an initiative called the Department of Government Efficiency, met with congressional Republicans and highlighted the potential for improving government spending.
As the deadline approaches, the focus remains on whether Trump can unify his party and secure the necessary votes to keep the government running.
