President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would put a temporary halt to the 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico. This decision comes just days after the tariffs were first introduced. Trump shared this update on his Truth Social account, highlighting his conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In his post, Trump expressed appreciation for Sheinbaum and noted that, as part of the agreement, Mexico will not have to pay tariffs on items covered by the USMCA Agreement. This arrangement will be in effect until April 2nd. Trump stated that he made this decision as a gesture of goodwill and respect for Sheinbaum, emphasizing their strong working relationship. He mentioned their joint efforts to manage border issues, including tackling illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
Sheinbaum responded positively to Trump’s announcement, thanking him for the cooperation between the two countries. She emphasized the ongoing collaboration on migration and security, particularly in reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the U.S. and weapons into Mexico.
Under Sheinbaum’s leadership, Mexico has taken several steps to address U.S. concerns about border security. These include deploying troops from the Mexican National Guard to the border and facilitating the extradition of 29 drug cartel leaders to the United States for prosecution.
While the tariffs on Mexico have been lifted, the 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods remains in place. This ongoing tariff situation reflects the complex trade dynamics in North America and the ongoing negotiations between the countries involved.
