President Donald Trump is cutting his trip to the G7 summit short due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The White House announced that Trump will leave Canada on Monday night, earlier than planned, to return to Washington. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the decision was made in response to the ongoing conflict in the region.
Trump had a productive day at the summit, where he signed a significant trade deal with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, the situation in the Middle East has taken precedence. Leavitt noted that Trump will depart after dinner with fellow world leaders.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by Trump’s warning to residents in Tehran, urging them to evacuate immediately. The Iranian capital has been under heavy bombardment from Israel, targeting military sites and other key locations.
On social media, Trump expressed his frustration with Iran, stating, "Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON." He reiterated his call for residents to leave Tehran as the conflict intensifies.
Earlier in the day, Trump confirmed that Iran had reached out through intermediaries to discuss a potential ceasefire. He commented, "They’d like to talk, but they should have done that before." He emphasized that both sides need to negotiate to end the conflict, noting that Iran is not winning the war.
While at the G7, leaders discussed a draft statement regarding the Israel-Iran conflict, which encouraged both sides to negotiate. However, Trump reportedly refused to endorse this joint statement.
As the situation develops, Trump’s early departure from the summit highlights the urgency of the Middle East crisis and the complexities of international diplomacy.
